Assistant Instructor Manual

Basic Duties of Assistant Instructors

Below are some basic duties that are required of Assistant Instructors. As a general rule, you must assist your Chief Instructor at least twice a week in order to maintain active instructor status. Vacations, sick days, and personal days may be worked out with your Chief Instructor and/or other Assistant Instructors. If you cannot consistently help out twice a week you will be asked to stop wearing the patch and uniform until you can fulfill your teaching requirements and your advancement will return to regular student status. It is important to note that the requirements for each school may vary; therefore, you should consult your Chief Instructor for their policy regarding this issue.

Assist During Classes

Teaching or assisting during classes is one of the most important duties that instructors have. Therefore, try to arrive earlier than your assigned time to teach. Before and after classes, it is a good idea to consult the Chief or Head Instructor in charge for direction or to find out what special duties may need to be done. Quite often the Chief Instructor or instructor in charge may have to attend to a new student or phone call, and may not be able to start class on time. If this is the case, then the most Senior Instructor should line the class up on time. In addition, you may be required to lead stretching, warm-ups, basics, or teach the entire class until the instructor gets there, if necessary.

During classes, make sure that you watch and supervise all junior students properly. Move around through the lines in class and help lower ranking students, regardless of how many instructors are on duty. As mentioned earlier, do what ever you can to help the instructor in charge out and to help keep the class moving.

NOTE: The Assisting During Classes section in this manual outlines how you can help students during specific portions of the class.

Keep the Dojang Clean

While all students are expected to help keep the Dojang clean, Instructors are responsible for organizing clean up details and to see that the clean up is performed correctly. If you see that the floor needs to be cleaned or that there is paper on the floor in the rest room(s), then pick it up. A clean dojang is much more attractive than a dirty one.

Attendance

You may be asked to keep track of student attendance on the days that you teach. If so, make sure that it is kept neat, accurate, and up to date. In addition, you may be asked to place follow up phone calls to students with poor attendance in order to encourage and motivate them.

Announcements

Be prepared to help your Chief Instructor keep track of dates for any special events and make announcements after class if needed. Communication is key to maintaining a successful school, so try not to let any information fall through the cracks.

Attend Instructor Clinics

You must attend a designated number of Instructor Clinics, as provided by your area's Regional Director or Technical Officer. Failure to attend the required number of clinics will result in suspension of your instructor status and privileges until the clinics are made up to the satisfaction of your Chief Instructor and Regional Director (if a make-up is available). Consult your Chief Instructor regarding their policy on Instructor Clinics.

Demonstrations

Instructors should take pride in the fact that they are usually the first ones chosen to help with a school's demonstration team. Please take this assignment seriously. You need to show up for practice sessions on time and be willing to give other instructors/students equal time in performing.

Prepare Students for Testing

In general, all Assistant Instructors are expected to help the Chief Instructor get students ready for testing. This includes not only teaching the students properly, but may also include specific duties like keeping track of who is ready to test, student board sizes, who missed a test, announcing testing deadlines, or getting test forms out.

Assist During Testing

All instructors are expected to help during the testing. Your Chief Instructor may arrange shifts with the other instructors for those instructors that cannot be there all day. The Promotional Testing Duties for Assistant Instructors section at the end of the manual deals with duties specifically relating to promotional testing. Consult your Chief Instructor regarding additional duties (i.e. test set-up, line-up coordinator, concessions and sales) you can perform to help during testing time.
